A Practical Guide to Astrophotography

Stephen Kershaw has been part of our festival since 2016 - ie from the very beginning. Stephen is the founder and proprietor of KTec Telescopes, Ireland’s go-to specialist for astronomical optics, mounts, and imaging accessories. With decades of hands-on observing and astrophotography experience, Stephen combines deep technical knowledge with a passion for sharing the night sky. Under his guidance, KTec has become a trusted resource for both beginners and seasoned astronomers. Stephen routinely leads workshops, offers personalised telescope consultations, and enjoys demonstrating everything from entry-level setups to advanced imaging rigs. He is deeply committed to helping newcomers get started in astrophotography—and eager to show, not just tell, how to turn a modest telescope into a window on the cosmos.

You can imagine how delighted we were, therefore, when Stephen offered to deliver a practical guide to astrophotography as the very first talk in Hotel Newport on Saturday 1 November?

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the essential techniques and equipment needed to capture stunning images of the night sky. Drawing on his extensive hands-on experience and passion for astronomy, Stephen will guide attendees through the fundamentals of setting up a telescope and camera, choosing the right lenses and mounts, and mastering simple exposure settings for photographing the Moon, planets, and constellations. He will demonstrate a range of equipment and share practical tips to help beginners avoid common pitfalls and achieve great results, even with modest gear.

This session is ideal for anyone keen to take their first steps into astrophotography and learn how to make the most of their existing camera or telescope setup. For those with a bit more experience and knowledge, Stephen will be on hand to answer any of your questions and help develop your skillset even further

This workshop is covered by your 1-day or 2-day ticket (or just pay €10 at the door) - and of course, children under 16 go free!
